PORTABLE BATTERIES

The battery is a device that generates electric current through the transformation of chemical energy into electrical energy. Unlike the accumulator, it is not rechargeable and is therefore also called primary battery.
The Italian legislation lists various types of portable batteries, divided according to their chemical composition.

A portable battery instead is rechargeable and it becomes wast only after several processes of charges and discharges.

The SAFE Group deals with the management of portable batteries and accumulators, from the stylus to button batteries, including also mobile phones batteries and other types used in electrical and electronic equipments.

HOW DOES THE RECYCLING OF WASTE BATTERIES WORK?

The treatment of this waste consists of three phases:

  • manual pre-selection: to separate the batteries and accumulators from other segments;
  • sorting: to divide the different types (eg. alkaline, Zn-C, Ni-Cd, etc.);
  • grinding of alkaline and Zn-C: to obtain for four different fractions: steel, paper and plastic, anodic collectors and paste of batteries.

The paste of batteries undergoes a hydro metallurgical process for the recovery of zinc and manganese oxide.
The other types of batteries are sent to other systems for the secondary treatment.
