Refrigerators, fans, small and large appliances, televisions, computers, audio/photo/video devices, energy saving lamps,
electronic games and power tools, solar panels, tablets, smartphones : each of this device is present in every activity of our daily lives.
When they reach the end of life cycle they become waste and are identified by the acronym WEEE:

The SAFE Group is responsible for managing all types of WEEE: especially Ped (small appliances), equipment for sports and leisure and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and air conditioners.
The devices we use every day contain many valuable materials such as copper, gold, silver and silicon, ferrous metals such as steel, rare earth, plastic and electronic cards that, when the device becomes waste, if properly treated, can be brought back to life in the production cycle of new equipments, reducing the impact on the environment.
Fundamental resources for the production of electronic equipments can be derived from WEE; also the demand for these resources is constantly increasing. WEEE therefore represent an important source of materials supply, which are mainly a monopoly of the producer countries outside Europe (especially from Asia), but particularly important for our Italy, which does not have significant mineral resources.
Electrical and electronic waste can then be considered real "urban mines" because they allow to recycle many valuable elements with ease, within an environment which is not necessarily industrial.
The proper treatment of WEEE, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment provides environmental, health and economic benefits, removing and ensuring the the safety of hazardous substances and the recovery of usable materials for new applications.
Giving new life to WEEE is a process that requires special procedures and must be processed in specialized plants.
The phases are different: from those common to all types of waste, to those specific to each variety of device.
The main phases of WEEE treatment are: the grant, retention and treatment (divided into pre-processing and safety of the materials), dismantling and recovery of components, crushing and material selection, end of life.
